Sexual Health Awareness and Disease Education

Sexual Health Awareness and Disease Education (SHADE) is a Boynton Health Service sexual health peer education group. Because sexually active students are at the greatest risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy, SHADE spends the majority of its time addressing safer sex strategies for those who choose to be sexually active.

SHADE provides many services around campus, including:

  • encouraging students to make healthy choices related to sexual health
  • providing resources and up-to-date sexual health information to University of Minnesota students
  • distributing information related to sexual health, as well as free condoms, dental dams, and lubricant to students
  • offering sexual health programming opportunities for fraternities, sororities, and residence halls to educate students about sexual health
Award-Winning Program
2007 Outstanding Undergraduate Campus Life Program of the Year, Awarded by University of Minnesota Student Unions and Activities as part of their “Tony Diggs Excellence Awards: Celebrating University Student Group Contributions”

Join SHADE
Fall 2009 meetings will start the second week of classes. Meetings will take place in Room N101, Boynton Health Service.

Thursdays, beginning September 17, 2009, 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Students can join SHADE at any time during the year. There are no requirements that students need to fulfill ie. past sexual health education or health advocate work. Send emails about membership to safersex@umn.edu or call 612-626-4086.

Abstinence
Not everyone’s doing it. According to the 2007 College Student Health Survey conducted by Boynton Health Service, 32.4% of 18-24-year-old University of Minnesota undergraduates were NOT sexually active in the previous year. Many students are not at risk for STIs because they are abstinent. SHADE strongly supports those students who choose to be abstinent.

Condom Facts
If used consistently and correctly, condoms can be up to 99.0% effective at preventing pregnancy and transmission of sexually transmitted infections. According to the CDC, latex condoms, when used consistently and correctly, are also highly effective in preventing transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. While the effect of condoms in preventing human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is unknown, condom use has been associated with a lower rate of cervical cancer, an HPV-associated disease.

Where to Get Free Condoms
  • SHADE office, N203 Boynton Health Service
  • Residence Hall Health Advocates
  • Greek House Health Advocates
  • Boynton Health Service Women’s Clinic Check-in Desk
  • Many Student Cultural Centers
  • SHADE table in Coffman Union (select days)

How to Properly Use a Condom
  1. Check expiration date.
  2. Squeeze the middle of the condom package. If you do not feel an air bubble, the package has been torn or punctured, and the condom will no longer protect you against pregnancy and diseases.
  3. Tear open the package carefully, without using teeth or fingernails.
  4. Remove condom from package and determine which way the condom will unroll.
  5. Pinch the reservoir tip of the condom to remove any air. (Air in the condom will increase the chance of breakage.)
  6. Carefully roll the condom down.
  7. When withdrawing after ejaculation, secure the condom at the base so that it doesn’t slip off.
  8. Wrap used condom in toilet paper and throw it in the trash. Do not flush it.

Lubricant
Even though most condoms come pre-lubricated, some additional water- or silicone-based lubricant (like ID Glide or Eros) can help to reduce friction and the chance of the condom breaking. Oil-based lubricants, like Vaseline or lotion, will break down the latex, causing the condom to break.

STI Facts
SSome sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like herpes and genital warts are transmitted by skin-to-skin contact, which means fluid exchange is not necessary to spread them. STIs can also be transmitted through oral sex and anal sex. Many people who have STIs don’t have symptoms, so they may not know they have an STI. Bacterial STIs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea are curable. If left untreated, they can lead to more serious infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease and possibly infertility. Boynton offers the HPV vaccine to girls and women 13-26 years of age. The three shot series protects against two types that cause about 70.0% of cervical cancer and two types that cause about 90.0% of genital warts. Check with your insurance carrier to see if the HPV vaccine is covered.

STI Testing
STI testing is available at no additional cost for most students after the bill has been processed by their insurance carrier. Test results will remain in your Boynton Health Service medical record. To make an appointment, call the Boynton appointment line at (612) 625-3222.

HIV Testing

Students have two options for HIV testing and counseling at Boynton Health Service:

Option 1: Confidential Peer HIV Test
Schedule a “Confidential Peer HIV Test” appointment with one of Boynton’s trained peer counselors. Test results are confidential and will not appear on any medical record.
For this type of HIV testing, there is no out-of-pocket cost for most students. For detailed coverage information, visit http://www.bhs.umn.edu/insurance/fees/index.htm

You may be inclined to choose this option if:

  • you prefer to be seen by a peer;
  • you prefer the HIV test NOT be processed by insurance; or
  • you prefer the HIV test NOT be added to your medical record.

Option 2: Provider HIV Test
Schedule a “Provider HIV Test” appointment in Boynton’s Primary Care Clinic or Women’s Clinic. Test results will be reported to insurance and included in your Boynton Health Service medical record. For this type of HIV testing, there is no out-of-pocket cost for most students after the bill has been processed by their insurance carrier. For detailed coverage information, visit http://www.bhs.umn.edu/insurance/fees/index.htm

You may be inclined to choose this option if:

  • you prefer to be seen by a medical provider; and
  • you are not concerned about the HIV test being processed by insurance or appearing on your medical record.

To make an appointment for an HIV test, call (612) 625-3222. Please specify which type of appointment you prefer.
