HIV Testing and Counseling at Boynton Health Service

Students have two options for HIV testing and counseling at Boynton Health Service:

Option 1: Confidential Peer HIV Test
Schedule a “Confidential Peer HIV Test” appointment with one of Boynton’s trained peer counselors. Appointments last 45 minutes. A rapid HIV test will be performed and results will be ready in 15 minutes. Test results are confidential and will not appear on any medical record. For this type of HIV testing, there is no out-of-pocket cost for most students. For detailed coverage information, visit: http://www.bhs.umn.edu/insurance/fees

You may be inclined to choose this option if:
- you prefer to be seen by a peer;
- you prefer the HIV test NOT be processed by insurance; or
- you prefer the HIV test NOT be added to your medical record.

Option 2: Provider HIV Test
Schedule a “Provider HIV Test” appointment in Boynton’s Primary Care Clinic or Women’s Clinic. Lab test results arrive at Boynton Health Service about one week after testing and are given at a follow up appointment. Test results are not given over the phone. Results will be included in your Boynton Health Service medical record. This record is HIPAA protected and will not be released without your permission. For this type of HIV testing, there is no out-of-pocket cost for most students after the bill has been processed by their insurance carrier. For detailed coverage information see the Student Coverage page.

You may be inclined to choose this option if:
- you prefer to be seen by a medical provider; and
- you are not concerned about the HIV test being processed by insurance or appearing on your medical record.

To make an appointment for an HIV test, call (612) 625-3222. Please specify which type of appointment you would prefer.

Who should be tested?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all individuals ages 13-64 be tested for HIV on a routine basis, and that those at high risk be tested annually.

Please take a few minutes to consider the following questions, which will help you assess how likely it is that you were exposed to HIV. Answering yes to any of the following questions doesn’t mean you have been infected with HIV, but you may want to talk with one of our HIV counselors to help you decide whether or not you should have an HIV test and to learn ways you can protect yourself
from HIV.

  1. Have you had vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse:
    1. without using a condom?
    2. without using a condom with a person whose HIV status is unknown or who is HIV positive?
    3. without using a condom with a person who would answer yes to any of the questions below?
  2. Have you ever had a sexually transmitted infection?
  3. Have you ever used a needle to inject street drugs or steroids?
  4. Have you had occupational exposure to HIV? (e.g., needle-stick injuries)
  5. Have you been sexually assaulted?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, we recommend that you make an appointment at Boynton Health Service to see one of our HIV peer counselors or a Boynton Health Service provider about testing.
