HIV Testing and Counseling

Students have two options for HIV testing and counseling at Boynton Health Service:

Option 1: Confidential Peer HIV Test
Schedule a "Confidential Peer HIV Test" appointment with one of Boyntonıs trained peer counselors. Test results are confidential and will not appear on any medical record. For this type of HIV testing, there is no out-of-pocket cost for most students. For detailed coverage information, visit the coverage page.

You may be inclined to choose this option if:
- you prefer to be seen by a peer;
- you prefer the HIV test NOT be processed by insurance; or
- you prefer the HIV test NOT be added to your medical record.

Option 2: Provider HIV Test
Schedule a "Provider HIV Test" appointment in Boynton's Primary Care Clinic or Women's Clinic. Test results will be reported to insurance and included in your Boynton Health Service medical record. For this type of HIV testing, there is no out-of-pocket cost for most students after the bill has been processed by their insurance carrier. For detailed coverage information, visit the coverage page.

You may be inclined to choose this option if:
- you prefer to be seen by a medical provider; and
- you are not concerned about the HIV test being processed by insurance or appearing on your medical record.

To make an appointment for an HIV test, call (612) 625-3222. Please specify which type of appointment you would prefer.

Other Confidential Testing Options

If you are unable to get an appointment at Boynton Health Service or need to be tested immediately, the Red Door Services is another confidential testing option.

Red Door Services, part of the new Hennepin County Public Health Clinic, offers confidential HIV testing and access to other sexual health care. No appointments needed.

How do I know if I need to be tested?

The following questions will help you assess how likely it is that you were exposed to HIV. If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, we recommend you make an appointment with a Boynton Health Service provider for HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) testing. (Answering "yes" does not mean that you have been infected with HIV virus.)

  1. Have you had vaginal, anal or oral intercourse without using a condom?
  2. Have you had vaginal, anal or oral intercourse without using a condom with a person whose HIV status is unknown or who is HIV positive?
  3. Have you had vaginal, anal or oral intercourse without using a condom with a person from a high-risk country?
  4. Have you had vaginal, anal or oral intercourse without using a condom with a person who would answer "yes" to any of these questions?
  5. Have you ever had a sexually transmitted infection?
  6. Have you ever used a needle to inject street drugs or steroids?
  7. Have you had occupational exposure to HIV (e.g. needle-stick injuries)?
  8. Have you been sexually assaulted?
  9. Did you have a blood transfusion or receive clotting-factor products between 1977 and 1985? (Blood was not tested for HIV prior to 1985.)
