About the Program

Many individuals are impacted by eating issues, body image concerns, and weight-related problems. The effects of an eating disorder can often be felt in many areas of a person's life: school, relationships, self-esteem, and physical health. Feelings of shame, guilt, and isolation are also common.  Boynton's Mental Health Clinic offers an 8-week therapy for students who struggle against bulimia and related eating concerns.

Often, the group continues after the 8-week commitment is completed. This group is then considered for an on-going weekly therapy or support group for clients with eating concerns. (Please note: We do not offer treatment for students currently struggling with anorexia nervosa. We will make referrals as appropriate.)

Depending upon the needs of the group members, the group may continue after the 8-week session is completed. This is then considered to be an ongoing therapy or support group.

Potential Candidates

Our program will best meet the needs of those looking for the tools to fight their problems and the motivation to use these tools in their daily lives. An appropriate group candidate will be:

  • medically stable

  • motivated

  • free of or recovered from any chemical abuse issue

  • able to be treated on an outpatient basis

  • if actively bulimic, free from behaviors that interfere in activities of daily life.

The group program is our focus at Boynton.

  • If you do participate in our group program, then you have the option of additional individual therapy, on an as-needed basis, up to ten sessions per academic year.

  • If you only want individual therapy only, we suggest that you look at resources in the community or we can recommend an outside therapist. See our referral information.

(Please note: we do not provide individual therapy for clients struggling with eating disorders without first participating in our group program.  The exceptions to this are if the group has started and you are waiting for the next group to begin, or during the summer when we do not offer the group program.)

Process For Group Participation

If you are interested in our group program or want to meet with a therapist to determine how to proceed, go in person to the Mental Health Clinic, fourth floor of Boynton Health Service, to schedule an initial assessment appointment.

  • This initial appointment can be with any available therapist.

  • During this visit the therapist will meet with you to determine whether the group is appropriate for you. If so, you will schedule a brief appointment with one of the group therapists.

If you have any questions about this process, call (612) 625-8475 to talk with a therapist.

Appointment Policy
Please note that at the time of setting up your initial appointment, you will need to fill out some forms. There is no co-pay for the initial assessment. There is a $5.00 co-pay for each group session. In addition, if you cancel with less than 24-hours' notice or do not show up to a group session, you will be charged $15.00. See more information on scheduling appointments and documents to bring to your appointment.

Group Dates
There is a possibility that the group time could change if the students who are interested, have a conflict at this time. Group facilitators will accept students' schedules for purposes of determining whether a change will occur. We ask that you know your availability when you arrive at your first appointment.

Referrals

If we can not meet your needs or you know you need something more intensive than what Boynton offers, we will work with you to locate a reserve in the community that is better suited for you. Talk with the therapist you see upon your initial consultation regarding a referral.

In addition, we provide the services of a medical social worker, who can assist you. Please call 612-624-1114 to set up an appointment for this if desired.
