Alcohol Assessments
|
|
Referring Students with Alcohol and Other
Drug Problems |
|
When students are involved in an
alcohol-related incident, one can
respond from a variety of different
perspectives medical, counseling,
judicial, or some combination. In
addition to dealing with the specific
incident, it may also become an
opportunity to see if this is part of a
pattern- an opportunity to assess the
persons relationship to alcohol and
drugs.
|
|
Boynton Health Service offers the
following assessments for students with
alcohol-related problems or incidents:
|
|
Both of these assessments can be said to stem from a
counseling as well as an educational
perspective. When is it appropriate
to refer a student for a Health
Promotion Consultation versus a Chemical
Health Assessment? |

|
Health Promotion Consultation: |
|
|
|
What is involved in Health Promotion
Consultation? |
- Confidential (the only
information released is notification
that the student attended the
informal assessment; there isn't any
written record kept in their medical
chart)
- An exploration of the students
chemical health.
- An opportunity to identify
potential. problem areas.
- An opportunity to increase the
students insight and awareness into
their chemical health decisions.
- An opportunity to learn (a
referral is not meant to be a
punitive measure).
- Is generally 30 - 45 minutes in
length.
|
|
Who should be referred for a Health
Promotion Consultation? |
A student who has incurred their first
offense should only be referred if:
- belligerent behavior is observed
(argumentative, combative, hostile)
- damage to property has occurred
- there is a perceived threat of
harm to self or others (physical or
verbal)
- excessive vomiting occurs
- concerns have been expressed by
others
- a student who has incurred a
second offense given the possibility
of their
contract being
terminated (especially if they were
not referred to an informal
assessment after their first
offense)
|
|
It is helpful to think of these
behaviors being on a continuum. If you
believe these behaviors are higher on
the the continuum, a recommendation for
a Chemical Health Assessment may be
appropriate.
If you have questions whether or not
a Chemical Health Assessment may be a
more appropriate referral, please feel
free to call (612) 624-1444. |
