1. Who is eligible for the University-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan?

The guideline for who is eligible to be enrolled in the Student Health Benefit Plan is that students be registered for 6 or more credits in a degree program, and that credits for which they are registered contribute towards the total count under the enrollment guidelines for being assessed mandatory Student Services Fee.

If a student can not show proof of health insurance, the student will be charged for the Student Health Benefit Plan. Typically these are credits for day school classes that take place on campus.
For International Students:
The University requires that all international students, scholars and their dependents to be enrolled in the University sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) unless they are covered by a United States-based employer-sponsored health plan or the Graduate Assistant Insurance Plan (GA Plan) provided by the University of Minnesota.

4. Can I purchase insurance for my spouse, domestic partner or children?

A covered student may purchase coverage for his or her spouse, registered same-sex domestic partner, and/or dependent children. Dependents can only be enrolled when the student initially becomes eligible and is enrolled in the plan, during the open enrollment period which is the first 30 days of coverage during Fall semester, or within 31 days of becoming an eligible dependent.

5. How do I sign up for the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan?

Domestic Students only:
When you register for classes through web registration, you will be instructed to enter the name of your insurance company and policy number.  If you currently have your own health insurance and don't want to purchase the University-sponsored plan, you must enter this information.

If you do not have your own insurance, you must purchase the University-sponsored plan.  To do so, simply leave the blanks empty.  You will automatically be enrolled in the University-sponsored plan and the charges will show up on your fee statement.

When you register in person, the procedure is the same - you're just doing it on paper rather than on-line.  Just remember, if you want the University-sponsored plan, leave the blanks empty.
International Students:
The University of Minnesota mandates that all international students, scholars and their dependents be enrolled in the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) unless they are eligible for a waiver.
