1. What if I lose my insurance coverage during my
active two year waiver request period?
You can enroll in the AHC-SHBP IF you request to enroll within 60 days of
your involuntary loss of coverage. Enrollment cannot be
accomplished through the online registration process if you have
requested and received a waiver.
How to enroll in the AHC-Student Health Benefit Plan:
1. Download a copy of the
Enrollment/Change form (PDF Format)*
or
2. Obtain a printed Enrollment/Change form from the Student
Health Benefits Office located in room N323
Boynton Health Service, 410
Church St S.E., Minneapolis.
Your enrollment request must be received in our office with proof of
involuntary loss of coverage from your previous insurance company within
60 days of your loss of coverage. After we have verified and processed
your enrollment, you will be notified via e-mail. Our office will not
process any applications that are over sixty days old.

2. Why offer a special plan for AHC students?
AHC students have demonstrated a unique and serious need for enhanced
benefits to the existing University-sponsored Student Health Benefit
Plan (SHBP). You are often at locations other than on campus and your
out-of-classroom experience puts you at risk for infectious diseases
such as influenza, hepatitis B, HIV, and other occupational health
risks.
You often serve on the front lines of healthcare facilities, meeting
the needs of patients. The current SHBP is an excellent, affordable
health plan – but the needs of the AHC community exceed the rest of the
University community in many ways. |

3. Why have automatic enrollment?
Automatic enrollment allows all AHC students to become eligible for the
plan. Currently, the University of Minnesota requires that students
taking 6 or more credits (resulting in the assessment of
Student Service Fees) have health insurance.
Students without insurance are enrolled in the Student Health
Benefit Plan administered through Boynton Health Service. Some students,
however, do not qualify for the SHBP because they do not meet the
enrollment requirements.
- As an example, a nursing student taking web-based courses may
not qualify for SHBP. There are many other categories of students
who do not meet these requirements.
- In addition, recent surveys have indicated that in spite of the
risk, 25 percent of the graduate students at the University still do
not have hospitalization insurance.

4. Why not let students get their own health
insurance?
Affordable health insurance with reasonable coverage from a
non-employer-based plan is inaccessible to students. “Voluntary”
insurance plans are expensive and do not provide adequate coverage.
These plans often have low maximum limits, limits on aspects of care,
exclusions such as pre-existing conditions, limits on hospital expenses,
and other components designed to limit risk to the plan. |
