Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP)
The University of Minnesota provides coverage for the health care needs of its students by offering one of the best and most comprehensive student health insurance plan in the country, known as the Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP). The combination of the SHBP and Student Services Fee allows students at the Crookston campus to be seen at the UMC Student Health Services for services at a reduced cost. 
Eligibility
The University requires all students admitted to a degree (enrolled for 6 or more credits) and are automatically assessed the Student Services Fees to have health insurance. Students who meet this requirement will automatically be enrolled in the Student Health Benefit Plan unless the provide proof of private verifiable health insurance coverage during the registration process.

Spouse(s) or domestic partner(s) (same sex) and/or dependent(s) of students are only eligible to enroll in the plan if the student enrolls during the open enrollment period (in the fall semester). Read more on dependent enrollment.

A covered student may purchase coverage for his or her spouse, registered same-sex domestic partner, and/or dependent children. Read more on conditions for enrolling dependent and download the enrollment form here.

 


If you are either on your parents' plan, your employer's health insurance insurance plan or any major insurance plan, you will not be required to purchase the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan). How to waive.

The Student Health Benefits Plan not only provides you with a comprehensive health coverage, but also comes with travel benefits such as free medical assistance for international travels. Know how to use MEDEX services when you travel and obtain a copy of your MEDEX ID card from this website.
