Message from the Health Director |
 |
College health services throughout the country have
a problem that is similar to that experienced with “dorm food.” That
is, no matter how good, its quality is suspect. Even if someone as
accomplished as Wolfgang Puck, Emeril, or one of the “Iron Chefs”
was preparing the menu in a residence hall, it would still be “dorm
food” and considered by many to be less than top quality.
College health services have to contend with a
similar stereotype. Regardless of the training, experience, and
expertise of staff in a college health service, many doubt the
quality of the services and care provided. |
To demonstrate its commitment to excellence in health care, Boynton
Health Service was the first college health service in the country to
establish a Quality Assurance Department and the first health service to
become accredited by a national health care accreditation organization.
Boynton has been continuously accredited since the 1970s and has served as a
model for many other health services throughout the country. |
|
Although the systems and quality assurance programs that are in place are of
critical importance, the real guarantors of quality are the people providing
the services. All physicians at Boynton are board certified and all other
providers are appropriately credentialed in their field. But more important
is the fact that each provider has a commitment to working with a university
population. That is why they have chosen to be part of the Boynton Health
Service team and that is why the University of Minnesota community is
receiving the highest quality health care. |
Although “dorm food” may still struggle with its image, I hope that the care
you receive at Boynton Health Service helps to alter the stereotype of
college health services. The University of Minnesota is a diverse and
complex community with unique health care needs.
Through its staff Boynton Health Service is well prepared to meet those
needs and make the University of Minnesota a healthy place to live, work,
visit, and receive an education.
